The Roman Catholic Church succeeded in holding a strong presence in Central and South America since Colonial days and although other denominations and faiths have offered some competition, Catholic iconography remains popular to this day. Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia were especially prolific in making santos available to the masses, so santos collectors have plenty of artistic genres to pick from.
The articulated saints are of special interest as they were intended for dressing, making it easier to add on the garments. Because of these joints and parts, many bits and pieces got lost in the shuffle over time, so it is especially exciting to find ones with all parts attached.
New World Santos can show loyalty to Spanish and Portuguese aesthetics or they might allow local color to shape features and style. We are partial to the Santos that show wear and a history of use.
